Jeremy Velazquez: Survey

Name: Jeremy J Velazquez

Year in School: Junior

Hometown: Chelmsford, MA
When you started playing volleyball: 8th grade on a club team, but attended camps prior.

Position: DS, but I've played everywhere except middle.

Number(if not college, your HS #): 1

Favorite Volleyball Player:

Personal Favorite Volleyball Memory: I'm gonna give three, one volleyball one and two JBC moments.

1)Last year coming back against Emmanuel in the New Paltz tourney, acing them, and digging their captain for the win.
2)Freshman year when JBC gave his needle speech, so amazing :P
3)Freshmen year when we were doing that word-skill connection activity and JBC yelled out "Ho magnet!" for a set.

Major(or intended major): Currently 3A and 7, but probably going to switch to straight 3 with a 7 minor.
What you want to do after college?: Grad school for me, just starting to look into it. Maybe a start up with my brothers somewhere down the road.
Favorite Class: 1.00 Fun, practical, and not too hard (usually).
Favorite moment at MIT(CPW counts for freshman):
Nerdiest thing about you: love parading with tie dye, a cape, and a calculator holster on my belt.

Things you do other than volleyball: Write emo poetry, cry myself to sleep (don't worry, it's a good thing :P), make coach feel uncomfortable around me, play LoL, watch people. It's a nice gig.

Things you are involved in around campus: I'm an associate adviser, and work in Irvine lab

Where did you live freshman year?: Lived in Simmons. Nice place, two great roommate experiences, loved the walk too, but I felt like there was somewhere else for me, not sure if I'll ever find it though :P I currently live in East Campus.

What was your favorite class freshman year?: 3.091 with Bob Rose through the Concourse program. Amazing guy, but he's retired now, sadly.

If you were to go through freshman year again, what would you do differently? :

Take two HASS-D CI-H classes, one each semeseter, to get that stuff out of the way while it matters less which ones you like and don't like (as it is pass/no record and A/B/C/no record freshman year.

what would you do the same?:

Like Benson said, taking the time to have fun while also taking every class very seriously first semester, was something I definitely don't regret.

Finally: upload a picture that represents you. It doesn't have to be of you but it should explain who you are. Just put it as an attachment on your email and it'll show up on the blog.

Daniel's Survey

Dadandi

Name: Daniel Chan Sngiem

Year in School: Junior

Hometown: Long Beach, CA

When you started playing volleyball: 8th grade

Position: Defensive Specialist

Number(if not college, your HS #): 2

Favorite Volleyball Player:  (professional) Sean Rooney and (not-so-amateur) Eugene Jang

Personal Favorite Volleyball Memory: Digging A.J. Witkofsky from Endicott, seeing Matt tag one of this former teammates with a vicious serve versus Harvard, murdering Endicott and Rivier at their house, "you know it, you know the story... tell the whole damn world this is beaver territory" and there's so much more ...

Major(or intended major): Computer Science (6-3)

What you want to do after college?: Work for a graphic design firm or be a lead UI/UX person or work in a startup OR work for Pixar (that would be sweeeeet)

Favorite Class: 6.02 Intro to Signals and Systems -- I really enjoyed the labs for this class, so much so that I did them early.

Favorite moment at MIT (CPW counts for freshman): CPWs, Volleyball, Performing Musicals (not rehearsing, rehearsing sucks). Taking my MITatheltics headshot with a mohawk.

Nerdiest thing about you: Thinking of inflatable bounce houses makes me think of differential equations... making nerdy and often esoteric references.

Things you do other than volleyball: Lots of artistic things -- music, dance, acting, painting, graphics. I should warn you that I sing pretty often. I'm kind of obsessed with anything Nintendo related or most things Apple. and Disney and theme parks and roller coasters... and Pixar...

Things you are involved in around campus: Musical Theatre Guild (I've been a five star general, a rapping drug dealer, and a circus performer that bites of the heads of chickens), a little startup that eats up my nights, and I'm part of a new fraternity called Pi Kappa Alpha (or PIKE).

Where did you live freshman year?: I still live in F-entry which is probably one of the liveliest entries in MacGregor. If you end up there and you want to live in my entry let me know -- it's noisy sometimes. My friend says it gets noisier than some parts of Baker.

What was your favorite class freshman year?: 18.02 with Professor Auroux. He's a very good professor. and most parts of 8.02. I would have liked 5.112 more if I remembered my chemistry. Oops.

If you were to go through freshman year again, what would you do differently? what would you do the same?: Differently: Learn to ask for help. Get over yourself and ask for help. I'm serious. If you don't, you may end up doing not so well as you wished and not know the material as you should or even end up cheating. Ask for help. Same: participate in activities on campus. MIT is a place of participation. You don't have to be the good or know anything at all to join an activity that you are mildly interested in. I never did drama in high school but I participated in a few musical here at MIT. Just have some fun and don't burden yourself with school work (but don't forget about schoolwork either).
